High Key Sunset

Detail pic
This piece was a lot of fun, playing with the values and resisting the temptation to darken the trees for drama.
This piece is unavailable and was traded.

I am looking forward to a special invitation I received for this summer.I have been invited by a craft fair promoter to come and paint 3 fairs plein air on site.2 are three day events and one is only a single day.The fairs are in June, July and August. The owner wants to use the final paintings in their marketing and promotion materials as well as promoting my demonstration so to speak at the events this year. The final works will be sold at a Gallery in Cleveland, Oh in early September.
I look forward and am already imagining how I will interpret a busy fairway with the moving people and sunshine reflecting off the tents.I plan on chasing the patterns, moods and repetitious colors in an impressionistic manner.I’m thinking of doing these atleast 18″ x 24″ as well as some smaller case studies/sketches.
It will be a good time to meet people and talk about my work, I’v never been an attraction before, a vendor yes, but entertainment no.
I am going to look around for some fairs to attend before these to get a feel for painting this kind of environment on site. Chasing the clouds and sun are one thing, people busily [ ... ]

IT COULDN’T BE DONEbyEdgar A Guest (1881-1959)
Somebody said that it couldn’t be done,But he with a chuckle repliedThat “maybe it couldn’t”, but he would be oneWho wouldn’t say so till he tried.
So he buckled right in with a trace of a grinOn his face. If he worried he hid it.He started to sing as he tackled the thing,That couldn’t be done and he did it.
Somebody scoffed: “Oh, you’ll never do that;At least no one ever has done it”But he took off her coat and he took of his hat,And the first thing we knew he’d begun it.
With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,Without any doubting or quiddit,He started to sing as he tackled the thingThat couldn’t be done, and he did it.
There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,There are thousands to prophesy failure; There are thousands to point out to you, one by one,The dangers that wait to assail you.
But just buckle in with a bit of a grinJust take off your coat and go to it.Just start to sing as you tackle the thingThat “cannot be done,” and you’ll do it.
I love this poem for many, many reasons and have loved it [ ... ]

Bright Blue
18″ x 24″
oil on panel, abstract plein air painting. My paintings are funny things.
This was a gorgeous bright spring day and I enjoyed the long moments and warm sunshine.
I just stepped out of the way and let my brushes and knives have fun.
If only we artists can just step away from ourselves more often and let go of expectations and false restrictions, we just might have a ton more fun. (detail above)
I know I did
Cheers,

Gentle Storm8″ x 10″ oil, brush and knife on canvas
I finished this piece just in time as a gentle thunderstorm blew in.
I love how the distant sky appears as a storm approaches.
I wanted to create a more peaceful piece than the one before and the sky obliged.
The trees are filling out quickly and I want to grab as many on site pieces as possible before the stark branches are hidden with foliage.
I look forward to full spring, the coming summer and how my work will grow and adapt.I look forward to filtered sunlight dancing it’s way to the ground.I look forward to spring’s blossoms of promise and summer’s simmering heat and quenching water.

Done, for now…
I love the natural shapes found in nature. Patterns made bythe tree branches, sunlight and all the wonderful colors.
Once the paint settles there are a couple more little things I’m going to add/change to this piece.
I have learned a lot completing it.and it has been something inside me that with each painting I am getting closer to finding and realizing on the canvas.

Still painting, this one took an unexpected pleasant turn. Will post before and after pics..am waiting on some more titanium white, I’m all out!!and won’t be able to get anymore until much later today so I am gonna crimp and squeeze every last bit out of the tube I have even if if I have to cut it open to finish this one today!
I’ve been busy chasing the kids and my chores are falling behind, as happens. When I’m happy painting time just slips by quickly and quietly.

Painting tonight will post tomorrow, I have been reading and reading and writing and writing and thinking and thinking, and letting it all go to see things new.Now is the time to do.There is a season for everything. I have been watching the small buds appear on the trees, glistening like popcorn in the sky. Quietly the green is filling the bushes, oh and the warmth of the sun is returning.May the sun always be warm upon your face.

Without an anchor.
Yesterday was an extremely windy day, cold too but tolerable.
I had just started this painting when the canvas flopped forward straight into a pile of cadmium yellow right in the upper sky. I had to work on the fly, so I quickly grabbed a hand grip and a small metal loop leftover from a broken wind chime near by. I gently hooked the top and anchored the loop to the back of my easel. It was early enough on to easily fix. It worked out and now I have a handy little widget to secure my canvas.
Here is April 47
It is 14″ x 11″ oil on canvas.
Later that night when I was coming home from my youngest Dr. Appt, I saw the most stunning sunset that I have seen in a long time. I had just crested a hill and there before me from left to right was an expanse of beauty. An orange/rose colored slit of the sun was ducking beneath the distant hill with an immense sky above filled with raining storm clouds. Have you ever seen the rain in the distance? It looks like sheets drifting to the ground. It was gorgeous, I’ve marked down [ ... ]
